Woot! Changes in Longitude wins a Lowell Thomas Award

by Michael on October 22, 2013

We don’t get to toot our own horns too much but we’re really excited this week because Changes in Longitude won a 2013 Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Silver Award for Best Travel Blog. The awards are given out by the Society of American Travel Writers Foundation and are the most prestigious in the travel writing field. The judges are faculty members at the University of North Carolina School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Other winners in the print media categories include Rick Steves, The Los Angeles Times and writer/actor Andrew McCarthy. (Whom we met when we were fellow speakers at the Philadelphia Inquirer Travel Show in January.)

Our trip mascot Little Rocky was so excited he couldn’t stop raising his arms.

Here’s what the judges said about Changes in Longitude:

“Changes in Longitude makes even the most daring travel seem easy, and the writers tell stories of their journeys that are intimate, accessible and fun. In a trip to North Korea — yes, you can travel there! — the writers show off postcards and other instruments of state propaganda, a fascinating glimpse into a country that is so misunderstood and isolated from the West.

In another entry, 11 of the world’s best sandwiches are honored, with mouth-watering photography and odes to the shawarma of Jerusalem, the kokorec sandwich in Istanbul and a banh mi in Vietnam that costs only 35 cents. The fantastic photos on this blog bring the color and energy of Good Friday celebrations in Malta and the Arirang Mass Games in Pyongyang to life in a way that makes you feel like you’re right there with the writers.”

We spend many, many (way too many) hours working on Changes in Longitude and are so humbled by this recognition. We’re now two years into our journey and this award provides much encouragement to keep it going and continue to write about our adventures and provide useful travel advice.

We also thank our readers who engage with our writing by sending us notes and leaving comments on our stories, so keep those cards and letters coming in.
